Stanley Security Solutions has moved its Distribution and Production Center from its northeast Indianapolis manufacturing facilities to Greenfield, Indiana in the Mt. Comfort Commercial Park.  Project leadership chose the new location because of the availability of the space, size and proximity to existing Stanley Security Solutions locations.

The site functions primarily as a distribution center with some light production and assembly.  The facility is approximately 168,000 square feet and the company plans to invest in building capital improvements.  The facility operates 24/5 – 24/6 depending on capacity requirements.

The IDC is home to approximately 105 full-time employees, including operations, production, distribution & masterkey roles all sharing a common goal to put the customer first, above all else.

Christine Cicchetti, Operations Manager stated, “The IDC maintains inventory levels that support a quick ship environment to meet our customer expectations for security hardware, combinated cores and cut keys.”

The production team is able to produce all BEST core and key product families along with KABA adaption cores, K2 , Medeco Biaxial & Keymark product lines.

“As we continue to explore ways of improving our execution and output, I am very excited about our future and the overall impact it will continue to have on our business,” said Shelley Loos, IDC Director.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only days away. As retailers make their final push to meet the goals they set for the year, the forecasts are looking more likely that consumer spending will once again be robust. Along with the increased sales, businesses will inevitably see heavier foot traffic as customers put the finishing touches on their holiday shopping list.

While no business owner in their right mind would pass on the opportunity to open their doors wide to any and all, they do need to be cautious and pay a watchful eye at the growing prospect for theft as store traffic increases. Any business that’s put in place the proper security measures and technology for the holiday rush is set to experience the lasting benefits throughout the year.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to implement many tried and true tactics to manage inventory loss both during and after store hours. Security cameras are one of the most effective tools to both deter criminals and to identify culprits when there is loss due to theft. Additionally, a security guard in uniform at the entrance is a strong signal to any shoplifter that monitoring against crime is a top priority. Businesses may also find that the additional cost of hiring another security guard during busier periods, like the holidays, is well worth the investment.

Outside of store hours, businesses can benefit from the same security measures that are regularly practiced at home. For one, thieves are less likely to target a business that has a professionally installed alarm system. An effective alarm system will not only alert the owner and authorities of a break-in, but it may also go a long way in stopping a forced entry in the first place. Of course, signage needs to be prominently placed in doors and windows that clearly indicate that the premises are alarmed. Lighting can also be a tremendous deterrent. Locations should be lit well enough after business hours, and motion detection lightening should be installed, so that activity inside can easily be seen from someone walking by.

“The technology available to retail businesses is almost unlimited in its application,” said Ray Radis, Stanley CSS Vice President National Accounts – West. “Video analytics can provide store traffic activity details and, while central station monitoring technology allows business owners to know when their store opens/closes and in a critical case, when it fails to open. Real-time video monitoring services enable store employees to safely enter the business at the opening and exit at closing times. Video monitoring audit programs are also available and can be implemented to help business owners ensure that staffing is sufficient at peak hours and marketing signage is in place, all while monitoring general store activity.”

The holidays can be a great opportunity for businesses to end the year on a high note and set the stage for a successful year to come. With the right security strategy in place, retailers can avoid having their potential assets included in the billions of revenue that’s lost due to shoplifting and experience the lasting benefits for customers, employees and the bottom line.

If you’re looking for advanced electromechanical access control, the S&G® 2890 PDL is the lock engineered and manufactured to conform to the highest security standards of the U.S. Government.   Sargent & Greenleaf designed the 2890 Pedestrian Door Lock to conform to the requirements of Federal Specification FF-L-2890 for the protection of classified materials.   Plus, it’s easy to install. The S&G® 2890 PDL incorporates a model 2740 high security combination lock, by far the easiest lock to install in its category, saving installation time and greatly reducing the probability of installer damage.

Often copied by competitors, S&G is the original designer of the deadbolt strikes commonly seen on SCIFs (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities) and other government and defense contractor secure areas.  Four rugged strike models accommodate mounting the 2890 PDL on in-swing, out-swing, and even double doors.

The security enhancing Spy-Proof® Dial feature is standard with the S&G® 2890 PDL. It restricts the area of the dial that can be viewed to a small band of numbers at the very top, making it extremely difficult for anyone other than the operator to view the numbers being dialed.

Nate Brown, Marketing Manager for S&G noted, “Even with its enhanced security features, the Model 2890 PDL is simple to operate. It uses the standard left-right-left dialing procedure for entry, and features an easy-to-operate inside turn knob for quick egress.   The time-tested design and construction also makes this a robust and secure automatic deadbolt device.”

On November 5th, I was fortunate to join President and Mrs. Carter in Léogâne, Haiti for Habitat for Humanity’s 28th annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.  Amy Koch and Brian Owens also with Stanley Security Solutions made the trip to Haiti with me to participate in the week long project.  Stanley Black & Decker was a corporate sponsor for the build, providing a financial and in-kind donation.

The week was mentally and physically challenging.  The devastation the people of Haiti endured is unimaginable.  Basic human needs such as food, shelter, clean water and access to basic sanitation are rare for most Haitians.  Two years after the earthquake most are still living in tents and squatters camps.

During weeklong build, 500 volunteers from around the world helped to build 100 homes in partnership with earthquake-affected families in Léogâne, a city 18 miles west of Port-au-Prince and near the epicenter of the Jan. 12, 2010 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

The build took place in the Santo community where Habitat will build a total of 150 core houses this year. An additional 100 houses will be built on the site in 2012. The community will ultimately house 500 families displaced by the 2010 earthquake.

“Habitat for Humanity has made a five-year commitment to serve 50,000 Haitian families, and the Carter Work Project will help us to build homes and raise awareness to meet that goal,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “We are incredibly appreciative of the Carters and all the volunteers, sponsors and partners whose are joining with us to help families in Haiti rebuild their lives.”

Habitat’s Carter Work Project was the culmination of a month-long observance of the need for safe, decent and affordable shelter that began on World Habitat Day, Oct. 3. Observed annually on the first Monday of October, World Habitat Day is designated by the United Nations as a time to reflect on the dire need for adequate shelter around the globe. Habitat will kick-off the World Habitat Day observance in Washington, D.C., with a focus on rebuilding hope after disasters, highlighting the work in Haiti as an exemplary response to the need for recovery.

The Mechanics of Enterprise Platforms

On November 30, 2011, in Stanley Convergent Security, by Lance Holloway

Recently I was speaking with a colleague regarding integrated security platform product lines and he commented that a certain group specialized in high end systems only.  This is an interesting point in that not all systems are created equal.  I have seen a fair share of “hardware” companies slapping together a vapid software client in order to put their relays and communications ports into some semblance of a user interface.  What can be a perfectly acceptable grain of sand in the shoe on a ten person, two door access control system becomes a debilitating factor when multiplied across thousands of devices and hundreds of thousands of customer records.  With this in mind, over the years I have grown quite fond of a number of features that I now look for immediately when being introduced to a new enterprise class security platform.

First in the list of must-haves is a solid back end database engine.  Is the platform a current industry standard relational database?  This often dictates the pass or fail outcome for the remaining questions that I ask.  Fault tolerance and disaster recovery hinge on the type of software architecture the manufacturer has chosen.  Next I ask about the graphical user interface (GUI).  Is it intuitive?  Having worked on software projects in the past, I fully understand the process by which functionality dominates any user experience concerns.  But when a non-technical individual engages the product, can they find what they are looking for with relative ease?

From there, my thoughts move to integration of many parts.  Does the API allow for smooth integration to the HR system or point of sale?  Can the users be divided into departments or subtenants (Partitions)?  Can the history be off-loaded into a data warehouse for trend reports and data mining?  And for me, possibly one of the most critical aspects is what manner of diagnostic tools are available through the system?  Being able to see every cog in the machine at a glance is critical.  Performance and trace log reports tell system administrators critical secrets as to how a server is functioning or how information may not be making it across a network.  These tools save precious days at times during upgrades or installations.  It is quite possible looking back over this wish list that each item was born from a very late night with some deadline looming over me.  And in each instance, my expectations grew towards a better system.

Building compelling, visceral user experiences is a daunting task these days – as customers’ expectations for interacting across any given touch point have started rising.   Customers are expecting to consume services from their service providers, and interact with you in more broad and diverse ways than ever before.   With web-enabled devices and rich user experiences becoming more pervasive; the bar is being continually raised on what constitutes a truly great user experience.

Do you have web-enabled service offerings? If a user is interacting with your web-enabled services, can they intuitively understand where the navigation elements are and where they lead? Are key actionable items readily noticeable and clear in purpose?  Could anyone from the target market easily learn how to navigate, find and act on information through your web-enabled services?

“Non omnia possumus omnes” [We cannot all do everything]
- Virgil

Trying to do everything can eventually lead to not doing anything well, and that can create damaging first impressions for customers.  Sometimes new web-enabled service offerings can indeed be detrimental to the overall experience, especially if any of the following are distinguishably different from the rest of their customer experience:

  1. Means of consuming that service (Are certain things available via the web but not mobile?)
  2. Navigating within that service
  3. Organization of information
  4. Presentation or visual design of information

Investing the time and effort up front to define and understand how a customer should interface and work with a web-enabled service, will pay dividends in the long run with improved usability, consistency, and customer satisfaction.
